Merja Keskinen leads visitors on a journey into the world of colors. In her works the colors glow in thousands of shades. In the works on display at Lauttasaari Church, the artist has explored the components of the color brown by combining blue, red, and yellow threads. These same threads also produced variations of orange, violet, and green.
The contemporary textile art works are rooted in color-theory explorations and the depiction of changes in hue, darkness, and purity. In the works, the artist studies colors and their transformation through a systematic and expressive method. The abstract visual language highlights subtle transitions and delicate shifts in color. Combinations of differently colored threads create shades in which the blending happens optically—up close, the individual thread colors can be distinguished; from farther away, the color emerges from their combined effect.
Through a simplified and clear visual approach, the works emphasize rhythm, repeating elements, and variations in color. The materials consist of fine linen and cotton threads, and the pieces are created using adapted weaving techniques. Small square or rectangular sections are sewn together.
Merja Keskinen’s exhibition “Discovery of Colors” will be open at Lauttasaari Church, in the church hall and the B-staircase lobby area, from December 2–30, 2025. The artist will be present at the exhibition opening on Tuesday, December 2, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., before the Christmas concert. Welcome!
Lauttasaari Church, designed by architects Marja and Keijo Petäjä and completed in 1958, was at the time the largest and most modern church in Helsinki. The church’s interior, lighting, and liturgical furnishings were designed by Annikki and Ilmari Tapiovaara. A major renovation was completed in 2022, honoring the church’s original design language and spirit. The architectural planning for the renovation was carried out by Verstas Arkkitehdit.
